Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables deemed illegal millions to be recalled

first_imgAny companies manufacturing Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI cables have been told to halt production and to recall these products. HDMI Org, the firm that licenses HDMI cables, has decided this type of cable is out of HDMI spec since it only has one HDMI Connector end. Companies like Apple, Toshiba, Dell, and HP all use DisplayPort, but peripheral and accessory manufacturers have technically been selling illegal cables to use with their devices all along and now, according to TechRadar, hundreds of thousands of HDMI cables are being recalled.HDMI Org said that the HDMI specification states that an HDMI cable only has HDMI connectors on the ends. Since, in this case, one end is an HDMI connector and the other end is a Mini DisplayPort, it’s “not a licensed use of the specification” and can’t be used. Apparently, all HDMI products have to go through compliance testing as defined by the Compliance Testing Specification. The CTS says that any HDMI products must be defined first in the Specification before it can be sold. Since there are no compliance tests associated with it, it “can’t be tested against the specification.”If that sounds a little confusing, here’s the breakdown.OK: HDMI cables with HDMI connectors on both ends. Not OK: HDMI cables with a Mini DisplayPort connector on one end and an HDMI connector on the other end.OK: A Mini DisplayPort to female HDMI is allowed since licensed HDMI cables can be plugged into them. For those with extra DisplayPort-to-HDMI cables, get ready to make some big bucks selling them on eBay. For those of you still looking for the now-illegal cable, you better run to the store before they’re all recalled.Read more at TechRadar, via Cult of Maclast_img read more
