Dr. Kateh to Purge ‘Unethical Health Workers’

first_imgDeputy Health Minister and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Francis Nah Kateh, has promised to purge health practitioners involved in “unethical behaviors” at any health facility in Liberia.Dr. Kateh, according to the Daily Observer Grand Gedeh Correspondent, made the promise at the close of a health dialogue for five counties in southeastern Liberia held in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, recently. The dialogue was intended to solicit views from citizens of the five counties about the health sector, especially about health workers’ attitudes toward patients. The five southeast counties are River Gee, Sinoe, Maryland, Grand Kru and Grand Gedeh. The dialogue was also intended to solicit views from officials and workers of other sectors on how they, together with officials from the health sector, can work to improve the system in the southeast as the government gradually takes full control of the sector.Dr. Kateh said recommendations from working groups in the ongoing dialogue, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Civil Society Organizations and County Health Teams, recently sent to the House Plenary at the National Legislature, have been warmly received and that the lawmakers have promised to fully support the initiative.Key among the recommendations are the decentralization of drug depots, modalities for patient input to ensure availability of drugs through minimum payment of service fees and attractive incentives for rural health workers.Based on citizens’ views, Dr. Kateh threatened to revoke the professional license of any health worker who engages in “unethical” practice.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
