Ebola Survivors’ Babies to Join PREVAIL Research

first_imgIt has been revealed that babies born of Ebola survivors are also to be admitted in the on-going PREVAIL Ebola Clinical Research.According to Dr. Jestina Doe-Anderson, who is part of the Community Engagement Sensitization Team, besides the targeted Ebola survivors who are being given first preference to enroll in the study, babies born by survivors will later be accommodated in the study to determine whether they inherit medicated complications being faced by their parents. She noted that the babies and close contacts of Ebola survivors, including sexual partners will make up the total of 7,500 target people for the Research which has so far seen the enrollment number hitting close to 400 since the research study was launched in June 2015 in Monrovia and Margibi counties. At the same time, the Social Mobilization and Communication component of PREVAIL, led by the Liberia Crusaders for Peace (LCP) last Wednesday held an interactive forum with more than 300 community dwellers, includingEbola survivors and close contacts in 72nd in Paynesville, outside Monrovia. Apart from calling on participants to encourage Ebola survivors in their communities to enroll in the study at two medical facilities (J.F. Kennedy and Duport Road Hospitals in Sinkor and Paynesville respectively), the PREVAIL Communicators disclosed that modalities are being worked out for Ebola survivors who got treated at ‘Care Homes’ outside the Ebola Treatment Units as well as those returning from foreign countries with certificates recognizing them as Ebola survivors, to be incorporated in the study. For her part, the Assistant Director for Operations at PREVAIL Julia Mulbah Lysander said her organization is working in collaboration with the leadership of the Ebola Survivors Network of Liberia to rally Ebola survivors in the Research so that causes of post- Ebola medical problems being faced by them can be diagnosed and treated.Madam Lysander pointed out that although the study’s initial target is 1,500 Ebola survivors on the Ministry of Heath’s registry, however the research will continue whether this number is achieved or exceeded before moving to other parts of the country.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
