Virat Kohli yet to reach his peak, next few years will define him: Ravi Shastri to India Today

first_imgNewly appointed India coach Ravi Shastri said skipper Virat Kohli will is a champion cricketer but was yet to reach his peak.Speaking exclusively to India Today after being appointed to the  high-profile post by the cricket advisory committee (CAC), Shastri said the 28-year-old is sure to do even better over the next several years.”Kohli is a champion cricketer – he has not yet reached his peak. The next five or six years will define the real Virat Kohli,” Shastri said in his first interview since being appointed Team India head coach.Kohli was in sensational form across formats in 2016. He hammered hundreds in Australia, smashed four hundreds in the IPL and became the first batsman to score double hundreds in four successive series.Kohli was in the middle of a raging controversy over his rift with Anil Kumble, who stepped down as coach in June. But the captain’s form with the bat has not been affected as was evident in the Champions Trophy. He also signed off with a record-breaking hundred in the final ODI of the five-match series against West Indies.The 55-year-old Shastri said he has not yet spoken to Kohli on the rift with Kumble but added his conversation with the captain would remain confidential.”I have not spoken to Kohli  (yet). I don’t kow what happened in those 12 months. I will start afresh. Whatever I have to discuss with Virat will stay between Virat and me,” he told India Today.Shastri will replace former captain Kumble, who stepped down as coach last month after falling out with captain Virat Kohli despite enjoying a successful run during his year in charge.advertisementlast_img read more
